E-mail is short for electronic mail and is a method of transferring data or information via electronic communication systems through sending and receiving.

Once you have finished Creating a new e-mail account, you can check it in a variety of ways:

Webmail

You can access your e-mail through our webmail system at https://webmail.bravehost.com. When prompted, just enter your e-mail address and the password associated with that address. If you forget your e-mail password, you can reset it in the e-mail tab of your Bravenet account.

Instructional Videos

You can find some instructional videos on how to setup your Bravenet email account with a few email clients here:

3rd Party E-mail Clients

You can also use most third-party e-mail clients to send and receive mail. We've provided step-by-step instructions for a few common clients. For other e-mail clients, use the general information below, and refer to your e-mail client's documentation for information on how to enter this data.

By default, as of March 26, 2014, new email accounts require SSL or TLS/STARTTLS to be enabled in your email client. Under the email tab of your Bravenet account, it will say SSL.jpg by the newly created email address. This encrypts your communication with our servers (including the username and password). Attempting to login to your email account without SSL or TLS/STARTTLS, and non-SSL logins not enabled will result in an Authentication Failed message. Please note this does not affect Webmail.

If you wish to allow email clients that do not support encryption, you can enable non-SSL logins. Note that this sends your username and password unencrypted, and could lead to your email credentials being stolen.

  • Login to your Bravenet account
  • Click on the email tab
  • Find your email account, and click SSL.jpg

After you do so, it will say SSLnonSSL.jpg which indicates that you can login to that email address without using SSL.

General Settings

The exact steps to set up your email client differ based on the client. In general you will need the following information. This assumes that you've created a Bravenet email address in the email tab of your account already.

Incoming Mail Servers

IMAP

Secure Configuration (Recommended):

  • IMAP Server: mail.bravehost.com
  • IMAP Port: 143
  • Connection Security: TLS/STARTTLS (secure)
    • If you wish to use email unencrypted (unsecure), you will need to allow non-SSL Logins
  • Username: the email address you are checking
  • Password: the password for this address. You can change this in the email tab of your Bravenet account.

Alternative Configuration:

  • IMAP Server: mail.bravehost.com, or you can use mail.yourdomain.com where yourdomain.com is the domain of your Bravenet email address.
  • IMAP Port: 993
  • Connection Security: SSL
  • Username: the email address you are checking
  • Password: the password for this address. You can change this in the email tab of your Bravenet account.
  • Authentication Type: Password

POP3

POP3 is an older method of checking mail. It should only be used if your e-mail client doesn't support IMAP, since POP3 doesn't support checking mail from multiple locations, and by default it doesn't store messages on the server.

Secure Configuration (Recommended):

  • POP3 Server: mail.bravehost.com
  • POP3 Port: 110
  • Connection Security: TLS/STARTTLS (secure)
    • If you wish to use email unencrypted (unsecure), you will need to allow non-SSL Logins
  • Username: the email address you are checking
  • Password: the password for this address. You can change this in the email tab of your Bravenet account.

Alternative Configuration:

  • POP3 Server: mail.bravehost.com, or you can use mail.yourdomain.com where yourdomain.com is the domain of your Bravenet email address.
  • POP3 Port: 995
  • Connection Security: SSL
  • Username: the email address you are checking
  • Password: the password for this address. You can change this in the email tab of your Bravenet account.

Outgoing Mail Servers

Outgoing mail uses SMTP. The information you need for that:

Secure Configuration (Recommended):

  • SMTP server: mail.bravehost.com
  • SMTP port: 587 (You may also be able to use port 25, but this is blocked by most Internet Providers)
  • Connection Security: TLS/STARTTLS (secure),
    • If you wish to use email unencrypted (unsecure), you will need to allow non-SSL Logins
  • Username: the e-mail address you are checking
  • Password: the password for this address. You can change this in the email tab of your Bravenet account.
  • This outgoing mail server requires authentication

Alternative Configuration:

  • SMTP server: mail.bravehost.com, or you can use mail.yourdomain.com where yourdomain.com is the domain of your Bravenet email address.
  • SMTP port: 465
  • Connection Security: SSL
  • Username: the e-mail address you are checking
  • Password: the password for this address. You can change this in the email tab of your Bravenet account.
  • This outgoing mail server requires authentication
