Domain Registrations

The Domain Registry

http://wiki.bravenet.com/Registrar Bravenet sells domain registrations to our customers through lease from our partnered accredited domain registry, Public Domain Registry Ltd. The domain registry is the organization responsible for storing and retaining the domain registrations, and for a number of other services that are extend through us to our customers. All accredited domain registry's are governed by ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which decides the various protocols, policies, and contracts all domain registry's, registrar's, resellers, and registrant's must conform to. As such, ICANN is responsible for moderating how the international domain name system database is managed, as well as oversight and compliance assurance of the domain registry's themselves.

The Domain Reseller

We at Bravenet are the domain reseller, also referred to as the registrar in most domain contacts. This means that we lease the right to register domain names from the domain registry, and we purchase additional services from the registry, and you register your domain name through our contract. Some of these services are what allow us to officiate domain registrations and other domain-related services; other services may be offered or resold back to our customers. We are the organization which stores and manages your DNS records for you, and allows you to modify and change them at your pleasure. This allows your domain name to point to a website, handle email, or serve other content or purposes. We also offer services entirely of our own, in conjunction with or in addition to any domain-related services, including emailing accounts and emailing services.

We also offer a privacy protection feature for domain names registered through us. The Privacy Protection service we utilize is PrivacyProtect.org, a respected domain privacy/proxy agent. Using a domain privacy service means that the actual contact details utilized for a domain registration will not be displayed in publicly accessible Whois Lookups; instead, a reference to the Privacy Protection agency is displayed, and attempts to contact the domain owner must be filtered through privacyprotect.org before they can reach any of the domain contacts.

The Registrant (You)

As the registrant, you are the name holder of the domain name. You own the rights to your domain name for the duration of your domain name's expiration, so long as all fees, terms, and additional requirements are paid timely and followed by. You will be notified of any impending domain expiration or other service warnings as they approach or arise, as necessary.

By entering into the domain registration contact, you have certain responsibilities to maintaining the domain name system. This includes that you must provide accurate and up-to-date information for publication into DNS directories such as WhoIS, you must promptly update all contact information within 7 days of any changes, and you are required to reply within 15 days of contact attempts made by us or the domain registry.

You are also responsible for verifying the administrative contact details associated with any domain names. This is facilitated by clicking the link in an automated email that the domain registry will dispatch. This verification email is sent whenever an un-verified email account is used as the administrative contact for a domain name; as such, all administrative contacts for domain names must be verified within 15 days of domain registration or contact modification. Failure to comply with this "RAA Verification" will result in any unverified domain names being suspended temporarily by the registry, until verified.

As the domain registrant, you may choose to transfer your domain name to another domain registry so long as the domain name is not too near its expiration date, too close to its initial registration, unlocked, and not transfer-prohibited by the domain registry. The price of a domain transfer is $12.95 USD, and will include a one-year extension of the domain's expiration when the transfer completes.

Pricing Information

The typical price for a one-year registration of a domain name through us is $12.95 USD for the generic TLD's (eg: .com / .org / .name), though some are more costly. Their prices are listed below, along with the length of their Renewal Grace Period. All prices are in USD, a la US Dollars.

Domain Management

Renewal Notifications and Schedule

Customers will automatically be sent notifications reminding them of the upcoming expiration date of any of their domain names repeatedly in the days leading to the expiration. These notifications will be sent by email to the Bravenet account email address, on the below schedule.

Automated email notifications are sent at 30 days prior to expiration, 14 days, 7 days, 3 days, and the last day of the domain expiry. These notifications may be sent anytime within 24 hours of the date in question, as measured by Pacific Standard Time (UTC-7).

Additionally, our registrar may send you email as per ICANN requirements, and we may sometimes contact customers manually by email or by creating a support ticket in our support center which they will be notified of at the Bravenet account email address, when their domain name will imminently or has recently expired.

Expiration and Deletion Policies

When a domain name reaches it's expiration date, it is considered to enter the Renewal Grace Period if there is a grace period applicable for the domain name. If a domain name has no renewal grace period, it may immediately enter the Redemption Period or similar instead. When a domain name expires, it's nameservers will be set to a commercial parking page, indicating the expiration of the domain and it's discontinuity from any prior websites.

Within the Renewal Grace Period, the customer has a chance to renew the registration of the domain name again for one-year from it's expiration date, at the original price to renew the domain for a year. The Renewal Grace Period lasts for 36 days in the case of all TLD domains that can be registered through us, with the exception of .name domains which have a 40 day grace period. Only the original registrant of the domain name may renew the domain during the Renewal Grace Period.

When a domain enters the Redemption Period, it is conclusively deleted from our databases and presides within the registry's only. Only the original domain registrant may renew the domain during the Redemption Period, as the Redemption Periods exists to allow customers to restore their domains from expiration to prevent the unintended loss of their domain name. However, restoration of a domain name from the Redemption Period is a time-consuming and costly process, and as such costs much more than the typical cost to renew a domain name. The fee is $75 to restore a domain name that was registered through Bravenet, whereas that price can be much higher in the case of some other domain registry's. Domains will generally remain within the Redemption Period for about 30 days, typically.

If a domain name has a backorder on it, it will NOT enter the Redemption Period. Instead, when it would have entered the Redemption Period, it will instead most likely be registered by the backorder. It is typically impossible to determine if a domain has a backorder on it, and if so who by. A backorder allows an entity to purchase the registration of a domain that will be expiring when it expires, though sometimes not without competition. If a backorder registration is successfully, there is usually nothing the original registrant can do to recover ownership of the domain name.

When a domain leaves the redemption period, it is considered to be Pending Deletion for 5 days. During this period, the domain cannot be renewed, and when this period ends the domain will be cleared from the registry databases and may once again be freshly registered.

Domain Privacy Protection Services

If you have a Bravenet Professional subscription and domain names registered through us, then you may utilize our domain Privacy Protection service on any of those domain names that are through us. In addition, we offer Privacy Protection as a separate individual service you can purchase on-top of your domain registration.

These privacy protection services are operated and offered by PrivacyProtect.org, a reputable name in the domain privacy industry. This is what PrivacyProtect.org has to say about their services:

Why Privacy Protection?

When buying a domain name you have to provide accurate contact information or else your domain registration could be terminated as it would be in violation of the registration agreement.

This information has to be made publicly available to everyone via the public WHOIS database as required by ICANN, the international governing body for domain names. Everyday, this valuable source of accurate contact information is targeted and harvested by spammers and telemarketers resulting in unwanted and unsolicited contact. Also since your contact information is public, you are at risk for identity theft and fraud and of being contacted by harassers and stalkers.

Privacy Protection ensures that your private information is not published by replacing all your publicly visible contact details with alternate contact information.

How does it work?

When you enable Privacy Protection on a domain name, we replace all your publicly visible contact details with alternate contact information so that when a WHOIS query is performed on the domain, an alternate mailing address, email address and phone number are displayed. YOU RETAIN FULL OWNERSHIP OF THE DOMAIN AND HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL OF IT.
